How to Start a Perfume Business in South Africa

This is a practical guide, not a sales pitch. We sell wholesale perfume, so we have an interest in you starting — but we also watch people order too much stock on day one and give up two months later. Here's how it actually works.

What it costs to start

Less than most people think. A first order of five Parfumo 40ml bottles costs R200, plus R95 delivery. Sell them at R55 each and you've made R275 back on a R295 outlay, with your next order already paid for.

A more serious start is ten M-Scents 40ml bottles at R585. Sell at R99 each and that's R990, so you've made about R405 on one pack.

You don't need a company, a website, stock cards or a shop. You need bottles, a phone and people who know you.

Where the money is

Perfume has good margins because customers buy on smell, not on brand comparison. Our resellers typically work on 40–70% over what they paid. What matters more than the percentage is the rand per sale:

  • A Parfumo 40ml makes you about R20 a bottle. Cheap, fast, easy to say yes to.
  • An M-Scents 80ml makes you about R54 a bottle.
  • A Paris 2 Dubai 100ml makes you about R50 a bottle, off a much higher price point.

If you're selling to students or at a taxi rank, the small bottles move. If you're selling at work or to family, the bigger bottles make you more per conversation.

How to price

Start at our retail prices. You're then selling at the same price as the online shop, which means nobody who finds us later feels they overpaid — and that's how you keep customers.

Don't undercut yourself to make the first sale. If someone wants a discount, give it on volume: buy two, get R20 off. That protects your margin and moves more stock.

How to actually sell it

Nothing here costs money, and this is where most beginners go wrong — they buy stock and then wait.

  • WhatsApp status. One clear photo, the scent name, what it smells like, the price, and "DM me". Post two or three times a week, not ten times a day.
  • Carry a bottle. People buy perfume they've smelled. Keep one in your bag and spray anyone who asks what you're wearing.
  • Sell where people already gather. Work, church, salons, markets, gym. A small table and a few testers does more than any advert.
  • Take the order properly. Name, scent, size, amount paid, delivery or collection. A note on your phone is fine to start.
  • Follow up in a month. A 40ml bottle runs out. The second sale is easier than the first.

Mistakes that cost people money

  • Buying too much of one scent. You like it. Your customers might not. Mix your pack.
  • Spending profit before restocking. Put the cost of the next pack aside the moment you're paid.
  • Selling on credit. "I'll pay you Friday" is how new resellers lose their float. Cash or proof of payment first.
  • Forgetting delivery in the price. R95 courier on a R350 order is real money. Build it in or collect.
  • Only posting, never talking. Status views aren't sales. Message people directly.

Where to get stock

We supply four ranges at wholesale prices with no minimum contract: Parfumo (the cheapest entry), M-Scents (the range that sells itself), Villa (the widest choice of scents) and Paris 2 Dubai (100ml, premium, highest profit per bottle).

The full price list, quantity breaks and profit per pack are on our perfume wholesale page, or you can go straight to the starter packs.

Ask us where to start

A realistic first month

Week one: order a small pack and tell twenty people what you're doing. Week two: sell to the easy ones — family, colleagues, friends. Week three: ask each of them which scent they'd want next. Week four: reorder based on what people actually asked for, not what you guessed.

Do that four times and you'll know your market better than any advice on this page can tell you.
